Welcome to Mushroom FM. We're pleased you stopped by.

Mushroom FM is a completely voluntary Internet radio station, staffed entirely at this point by broadcasters who are blind or vision impaired. We don't discriminate though, so anyone who'd like to be a part of our great team of volunteers is most welcome.

Our team is a global one, with broadcasters in New Zealand, Britain, Canada, the United States and elsewhere.

Why are we here? Why do people volunteer hours a week of their time to do Internet radio when there is so much choice? And more to the point, why do we think we're worth you checking us out as a listener?

Many blind people are passionate about radio, since it's a medium we've always been able to appreciate. And many of us know what good radio should sound like. So when we can, we bring you radio where the personality makes a difference.

You have plenty of ways of hearing your favourite music these days. You probably carry a lot of it with you on a portable device. There are on-line services that let you choose what you hear. But that's not the same as the radio we all used to love. You know, where it felt like the DJ was just talking to us. Where we'd get a big dose of the warm fuzzies when our name was said on the radio and our request was played. Where we'd hear those cool jingles and they'd stick in our head. Where radio was a mixed bag, not devoted to one particular style of music. And where the music was hand-picked by someone who knew what was good from a given genre.

All of us here loved that kind of radio. So we'll not only play you good music, but we'll entertain you with fun personalities who know their stuff, and who take pride in high audio standards.

As blind and vision impaired broadcasters, we don't seek to hide our blindness or vision impairment. After all, there's a whole mass media out there that pays our issues scant attention. So we will make reference to blindness issues and technology from time to time. We'll feature programming sometimes that covers blindness issues. But it doesn't dominate what we do, and we've heard from sighted members of our Mushroom Crowd that they feel better informed, while being entertained by great radio.

The Mushroom FM family consists of our great listeners who we affectionately call The Mushroom Crowd, without whom there'd be no point in it all, as well as our knowledgeable and friendly team of presenters. We love hearing from you about what we're doing, what we're saying, and what we're playing.

Mushroom FM is super easy to listen to, and optimised to be gentle on your mobile data. You'll find us in all the good radio apps, including iTunes, TuneIn, Ootunes, Radium and many more. If we're not in a directory, we want to know about it. You can also listen to us online via our fully accessible on-line player.

We love engaging with The Mushroom Crowd via social media. The best way to be a part of the conversation is to use and track our Twitter hashtag, #MushroomFM. Of course, sometimes it's just nice to sit back and be entertained, and we love it when listeners do that too.

You can also follow the official Mushroom FM Twitter account for show announcements and other news, or subscribe to our low-traffic, announcements-only email list.

Oh, our crazy name? Well the short version is that we wanted to be a fun thing to be a part of, and a fun thing to listen to. So after deciding that we wanted to be the fun guys, Mushroom FM seemed a natural name. Get it? Mushroomn? Fun guys? ...
